Teaching at the Mission Centers

Samantha Hawn – MC – Mission Centers Houston, Texas

I can't believe that it has been six weeks since I left the great state of Mississippi. Many things have happened this past week that it would take weeks to tell you guys. One thing I will share is that the youth group that came to help the Joy Center was on fire! Not literally of course! Their heart for the Lord at such a young age was something awesome to see. Most of the youth already live in the Magnolia Park community so it was cool for them to be on the other side working alongside us missionaries and directors. One other thing that I truly loved this week was one of the small group lessons I got to teach to my adorable 7 and 8 year olds.  I taught them how to look up Bible verses.  We got to look up their memory verse which is Matthew 22:37. One kid asked, "Everything we learn about Jesus is really in here?" Their minds are as if they are little sponges and I loved every moment of it. The highlight of the week was Saturday.  We got to visit Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic places of worship and learn more about each religion's beliefs and customs. I loved every moment of that experience because learning about each one helps me better understand how to reach the lost with the Gospel. It broke my heart that I was surrounded by so many lost people that were worshiping empty gods. There was one girl in particular that I saw at the Hindu temple that was praying the whole time we were there and was still praying when we left. I prayed the entire time for her as well that somebody would plant some seeds in her that there is a loving God that will accept her no matter what she practiced before and will be the True Guide in her life. This experience will help me tremendously at MC because one of the ministries that the BSU has is ministering to international students, so now I have more keys to open the doors of other students who are practicing these religions. In the coming weeks, I ask you guys to pray for the following...

  • The Staff of MCH: We leave in three weeks, but they are here year round continuing the ministries that we have had a part in this summer. They need strength and wisdom as they make decisions for this amazing place.

  • New Hope Church of Houston: This is the group that is staying at the Joy Center this week. Pray for perseverance and energy as we work these guys hard in our ministries.

Enjoy the pictures!

Monday was my turn to teach the big group Bible study and it was on the story of Jethro giving wisdom to Moses. I was tempted to use many NCIS references but of course, I knew better because the kids would have no clue what I was taking about. (If you have no idea what I am taking about, please message me so I can change your life.)

This was the lesson where I got to teach the kids how to look up Bible verses. This is one of the most precious pictures to me because everyone was so excited and interested to read.

When we visited the mosque on Saturday, the women wore long sleeves and head scarves out of respect of the Muslim people. It was one of my favorite stops because I was interested in seeing the Islamic religion and how in many ways it is similar to Christianity. I will definitely will use what I learn to better minister to my Muslim friends.
